Art Brief

Slaying the Dragon

Artist: Ben Zweifel

This is a two page spread. Text will be over some of the page, so please have a half-page of space that can have text that is either all white or all black laid over it. It is up to you which quadrant of the spread to have the half-page text space available.

A dead Krayt Dragon lies in the background, dominating the scene. In the foreground (and slightly in one corner of the art). A young, middle-eastern woman is standing, bloody vibrosword in one hand. In the other, she holds a Krayt Dragon Pearl up to the light in triumph. Though there is blood on the pearl (she dug it out of the dragon’s gullet) it shines the light of potential and greatness.

1. While this sketch fulfilled the requirements of the brief, there were elements that could be improved. The compositional flow and focal points currently pull the viewer off the page, and a transitional element or plane to show the distance between the character and dragon would be beneficial.

The scale of the pearl also needed to change to meet IP parameters.(Krayt Dragon pearls need to fit into a lightsaber hilt)

I asked the artist to think of the dead Krayt Dragon as terrain.

2. The second sketch was much better, with the narrative focused on the pearl as needed. Some lighting issues needed to be resolved, and I wanted to see some iteration on the character pose and attitude to choose from.

I asked for some thumbnail roughs of variations on the pose.

3. Some quick pose variations gave me some attitude options.

My understanding of the artist's translation of sketch to full render was such that I was comfortable approving the sketch, with some verbal cautioning about lighting.
